LARPing a Design School: Collective Speculation Toward an Emancipatory Educational Institution

How can we imagine an emancipatory design education without relying on a singular, heroic storyteller? In this workshop session, the group will collectively embody, perform, and speculate on the design school they want to become, as artist Andrea Fraser reminds us, “We are the institution.”
During this afternoon, the group will be introduced to Live Action Role Play (LARP) as a radically distributed mode of speculation in more collective, facilitated and politicized ways. LARP in this context includes reenactment, fabulation, and play, with players in diverse roles interacting within an overarching story. The aspect of LARP that will be explored is its capacity to facilitate collectively negotiated imaginations. Each participant will autonomously act out their role and interact with others to actualize the school they dream of. As a player in this LARP, you can become any element of this school, from students and tutors to administrative workers, board members, and policymakers. The speculative educational system will emerge through the participants' interactions in the room, exchanging capital, information, labor, care and many other forces.

Wie können wir uns eine gleichberechtigte Designausbildung vorstellen, ohne uns auf einen einzelnen, heldenartigen Geschichtenerzähler zu verlassen? In diesem Workshop werden die Teilnehmenden gemeinsam eine Designschule gestalten, über diese spekulieren und sie zusammen performen. Es soll eine Schule entstehen, wie sie sich die Teilnehmenden wünschen — Frei nach dem Zitat der Künstlerin Andrea Fraser "Wir sind die Institution".
An diesem Nachmittag wird die Gruppe in das Live Action Role Play (LARP) als radikal dezentrale Form der Spekulation in kollektiver, moderierter und politisierter Form eingeführt. LARP umfasst in diesem Zusammenhang Reenactment, Fabulation und Spiel, wobei die Akteure in verschiedenen Rollen innerhalb einer übergreifenden Geschichte interagieren. Der Aspekt von LARP, der hierbei betrachtet werden soll, ist dessen Fähigkeit, kollektiv ausgehandelte Imaginationen zu erleichtern. Jeder Teilnehmer spielt seine Rolle selbständig und interagiert mit anderen, um seine Wunschschule zu verwirklichen. Als Spieler*in in diesem LARP kann jede Position innerhalb dieser Schule eingenommen werden, von Studierenden und Lehrerenden bis hin zu Verwaltung, Schulleitung oder politischen Entscheidungsträgern. Das spekulative Bildungssystem wird durch die Interaktionen der Teilnehmenden im Raum entstehen, durch den Austausch von Wissen, Informationen, Arbeit, Zuwendung und vielen anderen Kräften.
