Mainz University of Applied Sciences will be there again this year!

Hands-on science: Mainz’s Science Market (WIMA) attracts visitors to Gutenbergplatz. Researchers from all over Mainz and the surrounding area present their research on this year's theme People and Growth in a series of tents and on stage. The program invites everyone to join in and experience a sense of amazement.

When: Saturday, September 7 (10 am to 6 pm) and Sunday, September 8 (12 pm to 6 pm)

Where: Gutenbergplatz, Mainz and the LUX Pavillon, Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Ludwigsstraße 2

The university will once again be represented at the Science Fair by various institutes and joint projects and will also be opening the doors of its LUX Pavilion:

Digital reconstruction of the Great Jupiter Column of Mainz

In collaboration with the Mainz State Museum (Landesmuseum Mainz), the Institute for Media Design – 3D Animation (img) is presenting the virtual enhancements of a 3D scan of the Great Jupiter Column of Mainz for the first time. The underlying data was produced by i3mainz using 3D scanning. Thanks to cutting-edge 3D animation, visitors can experience the restored column, which spans over 9 meters, up close with all its figures in detail.

  • 3D print of the Jupiter Column
  • Information on the Great Jupiter Column of Mainz
  • VR project

Cuneiform script and urban revolution: the Ancient Near East meets modern technology

Mainz Ancient Near Eastern Studies and the Institute for Spatial Information and Surveying Technology (i3mainz) present their research on cuneiform texts from Susiana, an ancient metropolitan region in what is now southwest Iran. Be inspired by the oldest metropolises in the world, such as Babylon, Uruk, and Nineveh, and learn more about the economic, political, and cultural growth processes of the time. You can look forward to experiencing the following:

  • 3D scanning and 3D printing of cuneiform tablets
  • Interactive annotation of a cuneiform tablet: try it out for yourself!
  • A program for children: writing cuneiform and unrolling cylinder seals

Blackbox models in artificial intelligence (AI)

Why are dogs recognized as dogs in pictures? Understand how AI models work and why explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) is important. Using an interactive example, the i3mainz team will show you how AI models work and what happens in the “black box” of a machine learning model. Try it out yourself:

  • 3D data acquisition with cameras

mainzed: Making networking visible

Experience the network of mainzed, a continuously growing alliance in the field of digital humanities. Together with its sponsoring institutions – the Leibniz Centre for Archaeology (LEIZA), the Institute of Historical Regional Studies (IGL), the Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG), the Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz (ADW), Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) and Mainz University of Applied Sciences – mainzed makes connections visible. An exciting quiz will guide you through the partners’ booths.

The Gutenberg Design Lab: Contemporary design issues and transdisciplinary networks

The Gutenberg Design Laboratory at Mainz University of Applied Sciences is dedicated to research and transfer in communication design. Discuss the latest design issues with the team. One particular highlight is the "Mycelial Space" project, a transdisciplinary network platform for research and practice relating to the aesthetic, ecological, and theoretical potential of mushrooms, which was developed with the University of Art and Design Linz. Join in and take the:

  • quiz on mycological knowledge

EMPOWER: Experience megatrends

The EMPOWER collaborative project, an association of five universities in Rhineland-Palatinate, including Mainz University of Applied Sciences, will once again be represented at the Mainz Science Fair this year. Following last year's successful premiere, EMPOWER is bringing exciting projects and hands-on activities involving megatrend topics to the Science Fair. Among other things, you can look forward to what the Competence Center for Digital Manufacturing at Mainz University of Applied Sciences has to offer:

  • Personalized breakfast boards: Design your own breakfast board with a digital manual milling machine in EMPOWER's demonstration production line
  • Experience virtual worlds with VR glasses
  • Science slogans: Develop creative science slogans and print them out right away as postcards

Kick-off talk

The Science Fair will kick off on Saturday, September 7 with a panel of top guests, including Clemens Hoch, Minister of Science and Health of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, Nino Haase, Mayor of the State Capital of Mainz, and Markus Müller, Director of Mainz State Theater. Prof. Dr. Susanne Weissman, President of Mainz University of Applied Sciences and board member of the Mainz Science Alliance, will moderate the event.

Supporting program

Parallel to the booths and the stage at Gutenbergplatz, the LUX Pavilion will be open 200 meters away with the exhibition Selected 24 and the special exhibition sehen sammeln sichten schichten for the entire duration of the Science Fair. Selected works by bachelor’s and master’s degree students of interior design will be on display.
