“Identity” — students in the 3rd semester of communication design formulated their design ideas, expectations, and wishes based on this theme in the “Independent Project” course.
Over a period of six weeks, with a free choice of media and working completely independently, the students expressed their very personal views on the topic of “Identity” in the exhibition at the LUX Pavilion. The exhibited pieces provide insights into the diversity of the topic and bring an abstract concept to life for the visitors.
Identity encompasses the variety of characteristics, convictions, and experiences that make a person unique. Identity is dynamic and develops throughout life as we interact with our environment and other people.
When we find ourselves in a different environment or culture, we often take on another identity that adds to or changes our existing self-image. This can lead to an broadening of our self-image and open up new perspectives about ourselves.
Visitors to this exhibition can explore individual and diverse perspectives with 33 exhibits of posters, books, websites, photographs, games, installations, and illustrations.
The students illustrate, for example, the power of a sense of belonging that unfolds through involvement in a club, cheering as fans in the stands, or by sharing alternative lifestyles.
Family perspectives on the topic of identity become clear in sensitive photographic finds from another era, original texts complement the product stagings for family recipes, and a collection of everyday childhood memories document the collective memory of a generation. The interplay between the development and narrowing down of personality is questioned in a photographic composition.
Eight pieces, representative of the wealth of ideas, were presented in more detail in short talks held on the evening of the exhibition opening. These eight pieces are united by the fact that both the concept and the design were developed independently, innovatively, and elaborately.
The pieces by Kristina Goettgens, Johannes Grelle, Lisa Fercher, Milla May, Shirley Sidharta, Ivan Scharif, Anastasiia Pantiukhina and Marlene Stuke received special mention.
