Orange the world

Mainz University of Applied Sciences sets an example in the fight on violence against women

Mainz University of Applied Sciences is joining in the worldwide actions of the UN campaign “Orange the world” against patriarchal violence and violence against women. The campaign is held annually between the International Day to End Violence against Women on November 25 and Human Rights Day on December 10. Its color orange is symbolic of a world free of violence for women and girls. In 2024, the campaign will focus on the violence that women and girls experience every day in domestic partnerships. In 2023 alone, 155 women were killed by their (ex-)partners in Germany.

Violence against women continues to be a structural problem in our society. It manifests itself in everyday sexism, discrimination, verbal violence or, in extreme cases, femicide – the targeted killing of women because of their gender. These forms of violence are ubiquitous and deeply rooted within patriarchal structures.

The central Equal Opportunities Officer at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Katharina Dahm, is always available as a point of contact for those affected by sexism, harassment and discrimination based on gender. External agencies such as the Frauenennotruf Mainz provide advice and support to women who have experienced sexualized violence.

By joining the Gemeinsam gegen Sexismus alliance (Working together against sexism), Mainz University of Applied Sciences has also made a commitment to creating a non-discriminatory and respectful environment for working and studying.
