Frauke Pirk is being honored for her master’s degree thesis Konzeption und prototypische Entwicklung eines oXygen-basierten Frameworks zur Edition osmanischer Liedtexte (Conception and prototypical development of an oXygen-based framework for the editing of Ottoman song texts) with the NFDI4Culture Music Award 2022. We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to our former student for this award.
With her thesis, the 2021 graduate successfully completed the interuniversity master's program in Digitale Methodik in den Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften (Digital Methodology in the Humanities and Cultural Studies) at Mainz University of Applied Sciences and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). Pirk learned just how successfully on December 6, 2022, when a panel of judges selected her work for the 2022 NFDI4Culture Music Award. The award will be presented for the first time this year.
Building on a current research project that involves the critical editing of Ottoman song texts, among other things, Pirk had developed a prototype framework for a current standard tool in the field of digital editing as part of her master's thesis. This framework makes it possible for song texts to be edited in XML in the TEI standard in the future and no longer have to be subsequently transformed from a non-standard editing program – as was previously the case – in a time-consuming and error-prone manner.
Pirk also posed the question of the extent to which digital tools and methods can be integrated into editing routines that have been primarily analog-oriented to date, and what the paradigm shift from an analog edition to a digital edition actually entails. On the basis of her answers, existing hurdles could be removed in an ongoing exchange and professional education could be supported on all sides.
In a second category, Ralf Martin Jäger (WWU Münster), Michael Kaiser and Sven Gronemeyer (Max Weber Stiftung Bonn) are being recognized for their inter-consortial networking workshop Critical Music and Text Editing of Ottoman Art Music. The aim of the proposed workshop is to focus an inter-consortial discussion between the NFDI4Culture and Text+ consortia on the Corpus Musicae Ottomanicae (CMO) project.
Frauke Pirk now works as a research assistant specializing in Digital Humanities/Data Science in the project DiCi-Hub: A Research Hub for Digital Film Studies, as well as in the Studium generale in the project Universitätsweite Verankerung von Angeboten zur Data Literacy Education (University-wide Anchoring of Data Literacy Education Offerings) at JGU.
The award-winning projects will be presented to the public at the NFDI4Culture Plenary 2023 at the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz in late March of next year.
