On September 23rd, Anett Mehler-Bicher, Thomas Klauer and David Scherr met on the Science Sofa of the Mainz Research Alliance at the Theaterplatz in Mainz to talk about the topic of the metaverse. At very latest since Facebook rebranded itself as Meta, the term metaverse has been regularly appearing in the media.
But what is the metaverse and what basic technologies is it based on? What distinguishes the metaverse from approaches like Second Life? In conversation, the panelists examined the wide range of possible applications, such as gaming, business, consumption, and creativity, and discussed the related opportunities and risks.
In the end, they agreed that, however the metaverse is formed, we must find ways to benefit from the social, technical, and communicative developments and to counteract any negative effects.
