Happy Anniversary, ICE

Celebration of the 30th anniversary of the International Civil Engineering degree program

30 years of International Civil Engineering at Mainz University of Applied Sciences

Mainz University of Applied Sciences celebrated the 30th anniversary of its International Civil Engineering degree program at the LUX Pavilion on 30 April 2024. The theme Build Your Future – Discover the World was chosen to look back on three decades of successful education and international collaboration and to toast the future of the degree program.

The first well-wisher of the evening was Prof. Dr. Axel Freiboth, Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. After a short introduction by Prof. Dr. Alfons Buchmann, Director of the degree program, Prof. Dr. Reinhard Kulick, founder of the degree program, then gave a recap of the origin and evolution of the degree program since 1994. Reinhard Kulick emphasized the importance of the degree program for the international profile of Mainz University of Applied Sciences, in particular, of course, for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

One particular highlight of the event was the live reports from six students who are currently completing their tuition-free year abroad at a partner university. The students shared their experiences and projects from different regions of the world, from the UK, Malaysia, and Spain to South Africa and the USA, through an online link, underlining the international dimension and practical impact of the degree program.

Parallel to the anniversary celebration, there is an exhibition dedicated to the degree program, which can be viewed at the LUX Pavilion until May 10, 2024. It shows projects students have implemented as part of their studies abroad and illustrates how the program teaches and combines technical, language, and intercultural skills that are essential in international civil engineering practices.

The event also provided a platform to introduce new scholarship opportunities for students of the degree program and to discuss the benefits of international experience from an employer’s perspective, presented by Elke Lässig from the Verein für Hochschulkontakte e.V. The evening ended with a guided tour of the exhibition and a social get-together with drinks and pretzels.
This anniversary underlines the continued relevance and success of the International Civil Engineering degree program over three decades and offers a promising outlook for future developments, such as international research collaborations on sustainable construction methods.
