Schools of Engineering and Business collaborate with SWR and Porsche

The integration of audiovisual media services such as linear TV, access to media libraries, and geo-referenced content in automotive infotainment systems using 5G networks is at the heart of the 5G Media2Go research project, recently successfully concluded with the participation of automotive manufacturers, TV stations, and universities. This represents a significant advance in the integration of 5G technology in vehicles. The interdisciplinary project brought together prestigious partners from the automotive industry, the telecommunications sector, and academia.

Within the project team at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, experts from the Schools of Engineering and Business worked together, notably Prof. Dr. Pascal Neis and Prof. Dr. Sven Pagel, with his research group for Business Informatics and Media Management (WIMM). The central interdisciplinary team member was Flavio Horbach as Head Developer. The interdisciplinary collaboration made it possible to gain valuable insights and develop innovative solutions for three sample application scenarios:

  1. Linear TV and radio programs
  2. Media library access
  3. Location-based recommendations

Travelguide – Research collaboration between Mainz University of Applied Sciences, SWR, and Porsche

The third application scenario focused on the development and validation of the Travelguide media service as an interface for location-based content recommendations. The purpose of the interface developed by Mainz University of Applied Sciences is to offer vehicle occupants comprehensive information about videos and multimedia content from the ARD Mediathek in their vicinity as a prototype in the Porsche infotainment system. This new kind of service allows users to access videos that are specifically tailored to their personal preferences and the current position of their vehicle. The Travelguide service opens up a new way to explore media library content by connecting the vehicle with the digital environment and offering passengers a rich multimedia information source of nearby video content from the ARD Mediathek during their journey.

The prototype was used in a Taycan electric vehicle from Porsche AG and was specifically designed for the integration and testing of 5G technology for video transmission in the vehicle. The practical implementation by Porsche AG provided valuable insights that serve as a basis for further developments in the integration of 5G networks and vehicles.

Overall, 5G Media2Go marks a significant milestone in the integration of 5G in vehicles. The location-based recommendations for content from media libraries were investigated with significant participation from Mainz University of Applied Sciences. This opens up new opportunities for future developments in this field. About the 5G Media2Go consortium

The 5G Media2Go research project is dedicated to the integration of 5G technology and vehicles.
