tudents and lecturers from the Construction Department visited the bridge construction project in Nierstein together with the Architekten- und Ingenieurverein AIV Mainz (Association of Architects and Engineers Mainz) in early December to experience the placement of the new railroad bridge in the Nierstein underpass first-hand. This project not only offered insight into the technical execution, it also provided an understanding of its importance for the infrastructure of the region.

Following the observation of the bridge placement, Johannes Heimann from DB Netz AG presented important data and pictures of the project in the construction trailer. The participants learned about the widening of the underpass, which is now 15 meters wide. This widening represents a significant improvement for local traffic, with three lanes of traffic and footpaths and cycle paths on both sides being made available in the future, representing considerable progress in the region’s transport infrastructure.
The field trip offered the group a unique opportunity to combine their theoretical knowledge in the field of civil engineering with the real-life example of the bridge construction project in Nierstein. They gained valuable insight into the specific challenges and solutions that played a role in this project. The event concluded with a small snack provided by DB Netz AG, giving participants the opportunity to reflect on and discuss the day’s events in a relaxed atmosphere.
