The TOEIC Listening and Reading is a paper-based test with multiple choice questions. It is comprised of two separate parts with 100 questions each.

Test CONTENT:

Section I: Listening

The examinees listen to a selection of questions and short conversations in English and are required to answer them (100 questions in total).

  •     Part 1: Photographs
  •     Part 2: Question/answer
  •     Part 3: Conversations
  •     Part 4: Short talks

Section II: Reading

The examinees read a selection of texts (including articles and e-mails) and answer at their own pace (100 questions in total).

  •     Part 5: Incomplete sentences
  •     Part 6: Error detection or text completion
  •     Part 7: Reading comprehension
How long is the test?

The test takes about 2 ½ hours.

  • 45 minutes for section I
  • 75 minutes for section II
  • Around 30 minutes for organizational issues

The answer sheets are scanned for the purpose of evaluation. The devices used for this most accurately read answer sheets that have been completed with no. 2 pencils. This has always been the US standard for standardized testing procedures. Other types of writing implements may result in the tests being impossible to evaluate.
The questions are based on contemporary scenarios taken from the global professional world:
  • Corporate Development – research, product development
  • Dining Out – business lunches, banquets, receptions, reservations
  • Entertainment – cinema, theater, music, art, exhibitions, museums, media
  • Finance and Budgeting – banking, investments, taxes, accounting, billing
  • General Business – contracts, negotiations, mergers, marketing, sales, warranties, business planning, conferences, labor relations
  • Health Care – medical insurance, visits to doctors, dentists, clinics and hospitals
  • Housing/Corporate Property – construction, specifications, buying and renting, electric and gas services
  • Human Resources – recruiting, hiring, retiring, promoting, job applications, job advertisements, salaries, pensions, awards
  • Manufacturing – assembly lines, plant management, quality control
  • The Office – procedures, board meetings, committees, letters, memos, telephone, fax and e-mail messages, equipment
  • Purchasing – shopping, ordering supplies, shipping, invoicing
  • Technical Areas – electronics, technology, computers, laboratories and related equipment, technical specifications
  • Travel – trains, airplanes, taxis, buses, ships, ferries, tickets, schedules, station and airport announcements, car rentals, hotels, reservations, delays and cancellations

The results are calculated based on the number of questions answered correctly, which are converted into a scale of results. The test result report provides an overview of the listening and text comprehension sections and the overall result. The overall result is obtained by adding up the results from the sections.
Detailed results, such as the number of correct answers, would confuse the examinees rather than illustrate their level, because the final result can only ever be viewed in its entirety. The detailed test results cannot be compared with one another.

Based on comparability and fairness, the TOEIC program decided to only publish the scales of results. This ensures international recognition and comparability as well.

No. The TOEIC Listening and Reading Test is not a pass/fail test. The test scores indicate the level of proficiency in reading and listening comprehension in the English language.

Many leading companies, academic institutions and international language programs around the world rely on TOEIC Listening and Reading as a standardized, fair and objective measure of English language proficiency for students, entry-level and career professionals.

The TOEIC Listening and Reading enables

  • verification of the current level of English
  • qualification for a new job or a promotion
  • upgrading of professional qualifications
  • monitoring of your own progress in English
  • achievement of your own learning goals

The results are used to check the current level of knowledge of the examinee's English. Because language skills can improve or deteriorate over time, a validity period of two years is generally recommended, although this may vary from institution to institution.

The TOEIC is a tool for measuring your overall proficiency in English. To improve your English skills, you need to study the English language and, more importantly, practice it. There are several things you can do every day that will help you prepare for the TOEIC. Here are some examples:

  • Listening to English music - music helps you to acquire the rhythm and intonation patterns of spoken English.
  • Using the language - half an hour every day, during which you communicate only in English: from person to person and in emails, for example.
  • Reading - reading is the best way to expand your vocabulary: for example newspapers, magazines, websites, books (light fiction, non-fiction) - it should be interesting and not too difficult.
  • Writing - for example, keeping a journal in English, using new words and expressions and practicing them. This helps to internalize sentence structures and new words.
  • Listening to radio and watching videos - an easy way to absorb the language.
  • Taking an English class - a placement test before choosing a class gives you a rough idea of your level. Always choose English classes according to your level with the aim of progressing one level. After completing a class, we recommend you take  the TOEIC - this will allow you to see exactly what progress you have achieved.

  • Target Score: Student's Pack (book + CD), Cambridge University Press
