Dual, on-the-job, and part-time studies – how they differ
Most people have probably come across the terms duales Studium (dual studies) and berufsbegleitendes Studium (part-time studies). But how do you differentiate between them and what is the difference between them and berufsintegrierendes Studium (on-the-job studies)? We explain it to you.
A degree program in the dual system is a university degree program that integrates regular practical work experience – similar to traditional German vocational training. You can complete a dual program as a vocational apprenticeship or on-the-job, meaning that in parallel to your job, you can also complete continuing education that matches your professional career profile (see on-the-job studies). In a dual program, lectures and seminars at a university alternate with practical work at a company, giving students a high level of practical experience during their theoretical training and allowing them to gain their first work experience at the same time. A dual program concludes with a bachelor’s degree. More and more companies are also offering the option of completing a dual master’s degree.
The on-the-job degree program is a version of the dual program and is designed to provide further professional training as part of your current job – the curriculum therefore matches your job profile. The aim of on-the-job studies is to quickly implement your newly acquired knowledge within your company. Consequently, the focus is on a high degree of practical relevance. In your bachelor’s or master’s thesis, you will often work on and advance specific projects at the company where you work. Your employer is informed about this degree program and enters into a cooperation agreement with Mainz University of Applied Sciences. You can expect particularly attractive conditions at our university – a semester fee of €350 per semester plus the company fee of €600. To ensure that your studies are as compatible as possible with your job, we offer you a specially adapted schedule of lectures, which take place both online and in person (in-person lectures: Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 pm to 8:15 pm and Saturdays from 8:15 am to 3:15 pm).
You can complete a part-time degree program while continuing to work. It is not essential for the curriculum to be related to your current field of work. Part-time study is particularly suitable for continuing your personal education or changing your career direction. Employers do not need to be informed about this program.
If you have already completed a bachelor’s degree in management or business administration, you may be wondering whether it is even necessary to pursue a master’s degree. Studying for a dual, on-the-job Master’s degree in management will help you specialize in one of the optional specializations and set you apart from the masses of applicants who do not aspire to a master’s degree after completing their bachelor’s degree, but instead go straight into the world of work.
This specialization will better equip you for future management positions, as you will learn valuable digital key qualifications in addition to sound management know-how. In the age of digitalization, it is particularly important to be able to work professionally with AIs and digital data, for example. In the on-the-job Master’s in Management, you will acquire digital skills that will also set you apart from the competition and improve your future career opportunities because you will be equipped with the relevant theoretical and specialized tools for real-world work. This opens the door to various professional fields, including
- Controlling
- Human Resources
- Product Management
What our students and alumni particularly like about the on-the-job Master’s in Management is the close connection between theory and practice. All seminars and lectures are closely related to the real world of work and use examples from students’ everyday work life. This enables you to transfer your theoretical knowledge directly to specific applications and prepare for the future by focusing on specific topics. Many of our students and alumni also find the balance between theory and practice particularly pleasant, as they do not spend all their time sitting in lecture halls, but are instead able to integrate their specialized training directly into their day-to-day work life. This results in a balanced relationship between time spent learning and time spent working.
In addition, people from different economic sectors come together in the study groups during on-the-job studies. This not only facilitates a diverse exchange, giving you interesting insights into other professional fields, it also offers you the opportunity to make valuable contacts for your own professional future. Salary often plays a decisive role, especially if you are already working. When you are studying full-time, you must be able to support yourself financially, as you have no income during this time but do have to pay semester fees. In an on-the-job degree program, you will continue to work, as the degree program is closely linked to your job. Your employer will enter into a cooperation agreement with Mainz University of Applied Sciences to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
