Six reasons for completing a dual degree and vocational training in business administration
Dual degree program in business administration – a curriculum with practical relevance
In seven semesters, our dual studies in business administration provides students with the essential skills they need in business administration. In the first four semesters, you acquire key business administration skills. In the last three semesters, you learn essential management skills and have the opportunity to choose an area of specialization. Applying the knowledge you have acquired is a fundamental part of the dual business administration program.
In the required modules, we provide you with broad-based management knowledge. Among other things, you can expect the following subjects:
While the modules related to the fields of accounting, finance, and controlling deal with the documentation, monitoring and evaluation of all business activities of a company, the marketing modules cover the actions companies can take to sell their products and services and increase the market value of their own company.
Human resource management is playing an increasingly important role in view of the growing shortage of skilled workers. In the human resource management modules, you learn, for example, what measures can be used to recruit staff and how companies can promote staff development. Materials management, logistics, and production have also become an important aspect of the corporate environment in recent years following delivery difficulties, along with legal regulations relating to the Supply Chain Act. We provide you with insights into the fundamentals of these areas.
Business and economic problems can often be solved using mathematical and statistical methods. You learn about potential solutions using mathematical and statistical methods in quantitative modules such as mathematics and statistics. Digitalization and IT are important factors for the success of companies today. These topics are covered in the Information Systems modules.
While business administration deals with the commercial activities of organizations or companies, economics deals with commercial activities in the overall economic process. Taxes are an important aspect in many corporate decisions, as are aspects of business law that companies should take into account when making decisions.
Through interdisciplinary case studies, the use of business simulations, and team-building events in small groups, you will acquire specialized, methodological, personal, and social skills.
Our dual degree course in business administration has a modular structure. Each module concludes with its own examination. In the practical module, you will explore specific topics from your own work experience in greater depth.
The Studium Integrale offers you a broader perspective. You can acquire knowledge in various subject areas, such as languages, journalism, and applied psychology. The Studium Integrale will expand your soft skills and benefit you in both your professional and personal life.
In addition to acquiring key business management skills, you can also choose your first specialization during your Bachelor's degree with us. Options and workshops are elective modules that offer you the opportunity to specialize. We provide you with the following options for specialization during your studies:
- Selection of two options from a wide range of topics (out of around 20 options offered each semester) in the 5th and 6th semesters
- Two company workshops or other options to deepen your knowledge of important and timely topics
The options are individual elective modules in subject areas including banking and financial services, controlling, marketing, human resources, taxes, and auditing. In the business administration workshops, you will expand your business administration expertise in a practical, application-oriented manner.
You have the opportunity to choose a specialization and have it indicated on your transcript when you graduate. The following specializations are available:
- Accounting, Auditing & Taxation
- Controlling & Finance
- Digital Business
- Global Sustainability
- Logistics & Supply Chain Management
- Marketing
- HR Management and Psychology
If you would like to have a specialization indicated:
- Complete three options from the area of specialization
- Write your bachelor’s thesis in the area of specialization
or
- Complete two options from the area of specialization
- Relevant topic in the area of specialization as part of the practical module
- Write your bachelor’s thesis in the area of specialization
As a result of your practical work experience, you already have the prior knowledge required for many business modules and have an advantage over many other students in other degree programs.
The practical module offers an intensive blend of business issues with the application-oriented instruction of individual subject areas of the degree program. These are supplemented with case studies and group work as forms of social learning. Students often write their bachelor’s thesis in collaboration with their employer.
The degree program model in Mainz
You benefit from the quality and excellent reputation of a state university. We offer high quality under fair conditions. Your lecturers are established academics with extensive practical experience and instructors fresh from the business world.
Based on our 40+ years of experience with part-time studies, the lectures are carefully tailored to fit in with everyday working life. In our model in Mainz, lectures take place on a half-day during the week and on Saturdays on our modern campus and are supplemented with selected online content. You take examinations throughout the semester, not just at the end of the semester like in many other degree programs. This distributes the workload more evenly throughout the semester, promotes sustained learning, and reduces exam stress.
Academic success is assessed using the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). To graduate, you must achieve a total of 180 ECTS credits. Examinations are completed in the form of written examinations, written assignments, presentations, oral examinations, papers, and the final bachelor’s thesis.
The exam requirements and procedures are governed by the General Examination Regulations (APO) and the Subject-Related Examination Regulations (APO).
Parallel qualification and financial security
While graduates of traditional degree programs do not begin their professional career until after graduation, students in dual programs already start their career as soon as they begin their studies, parallel to their dual studies in business administration. This enables you to combine your entry-level start and career advancement with the acquisition of an internationally recognized university degree.
The business administration dual program gives you the opportunity to quickly apply what you have learned at the university to your job and to be financially secure. A bachelor’s degree also opens up a wide range of career opportunities. Furthermore, experience has shown that the risk of dropping out of university is significantly lower in the dual qualification program at the company and the university.
If we have succeeded in convincing you about the concept of dual studies, then take the next step and apply. You can find information on applying to the dual degree program in business administration and the admission requirements here.
