Childcare
Mainz University of Applied Sciences has a comprehensive range of childcare services that cover all age groups and all individual needs of parents. It ranges from the classic nursery school Campulino to the offer of child-minders, to booking vacation childcare, to emergency facilities when well-established childcare solutions fail on short notice.
In particular, Mainz University of Applied Sciences offers additional financial assistance for low-income students:
Studierendenwerk Mainz Nursery Schools
Studierendenwerk Mainz has been a provider of childcare centers since 2011. A total of 38 spaces are available for children under two years of age and 144 spaces for children over two years of age.
A prerequisite for registration is that at least one parent is either enrolled at the university or college or works for one of the cooperation partners. These are Mainz University of Applied Sciences, the Max Planck Institutes for Chemistry and for Polymer Research, and the Institute for Molecular Biology. In addition, the primary residence must be in Mainz and the child must not already have a spot in another childcare facility.
The fee for children under two years of age depends on the income of the parents. For children older than two years, only lunch costs apply.

Network of child-minders
The care concept includes
- The pedagogical accompaniment of the child-minders
- Orientation towards the care needs of those affected (lecture times, for example)
- Children from six months of age (in some cases also younger children)
- A childcare period of max. 20 hours per week
- Income-dependent funding by the university
The network of child-minders has pedagogical support and can adapt flexibly to the need for care. The often fixed lecture times, examination dates and library regulations can thus be reconciled with the family commitments.
Both students and employees can use the childcare service. Depending on the income situation, the university will cover a maximum of half of the costs for supervising students' children. The network of childminders guarantees parents reliable and flexible care.
Online childcare
During the Covid-19 pandemic, pme Familienservice developed a program for virtual childcare and activities for children between the ages of 6 and 12 and incorporated it into its services. In small groups, the children play, do crafts and exercise together every day with a dedicated caregiver and always in the same group.
The package includes three hours of childcare daily in the morning or afternoon (Monday through Friday, excluding holidays) and is divided into:
Virtual small group session
- Two hours either in the morning or in the afternoon.
- The hours are divided into: welcome session, themed creative activities, physical activity sessions, and feedback sessions.
- Interactive small groups with an average of six children of similar ages.
- One dedicated caregiver per small group.
- Reading, crafts, singing and physical activity games together.
Virtual big group offerings
- One hour at noon, before or after the small group.
- Large groups are open to all children from the small groups and have a theme for the week.
- Exciting and activating activities provide fun and variety in the child's room.
You can register online using the portal.
Vacation program
The pme Familienservice offers vacation programs for children between the ages of 6 and 12 with parents who are members of Mainz University of Applied Sciences.
Childcare takes place on all vacation days between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and can be booked individually per day. The day starts with a group breakfast and then continues with the specified program activity. This may include, for example:
- Going to the zoo
- Climbing course
- Bowling
- Woodworking
- Going to the movies
- Building a mini-terrarium
- Going to a museum
A group lunch or picnic is also planned. Depending on the activity, the cost of participation ranges from €8 to €15 per day.
Registration (online using the portal) is usually possible up to three days before the day of the activity, or on short notice if there are spaces available.
Back-up childcare for emergencies
Parents who work or study know the feeling when seemingly reliable regular childcare is cancelled on short notice, due to the illness of the childcare provider, for example, and they are faced with a conflict with the demands of their own job or studies. In this case, emergency care is provided at the back-up facility. Registration is available until 6:00 pm the day before.
Every 1st Saturday of the month from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, parents and children have the opportunity to tour the back-up facility and discuss the formalities with members of Family Services. Alternatively, a virtual tour is also available.
3K - Kinder, Kunst, Kultur is a back-up center that guarantees child care in emergency cases and acute crises, for example if parents, grandparents or childminders fall ill, nursery school is closed, or during school vacations. Up to ten children from 6 weeks to approx. 12 years of age are cared for in a mixed-age group.
The 3K - Kinder, Kunst, Kultur back-up is located directly in downtown Mainz. The lovingly furnished rooms invite the children to read, paint, do crafts, do homework or just play. A resting room room is available for rest and relaxation. 3K has an attractive outdoor area and an educational kitchen where healthy meals are prepared together with the children.
